Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Major was a Roman general and statesmen, best known for his achievements during the Second Punic War against Carthage. It was Scipio that commanded the Romans at the Battle of Zama, in which Hannibal was defeated, resulting in Carthage's capitulation.
Scipio was born in 236 BC as a member of the Cornelia gens, a powerful patrician family. He won by default, as he was the only one willing to volunteer for the command.
Scipio made good use of his time in Spain. He captured New Carthage, gained native allies, and even defeated Hasdrubal in a pitched battle. Hasdrubal marched towards Italy, but was promptly defeated at the Battle of Metaurus by Claudius Nero.
Most of the Sicilian garrison were veterans from Cannae, who eagerly joined Scipio's army.
Upon arrival in Africa, Scipio went to work securing the friendship of the Kingdom of Numidia, who up to that point had been allies with Carthage. The Carthaginian Senate recalled Hannibal from Italy to meet this new threat, but was decisively defeated by Scipio at Zama.
