Bertrand du Guesclin was a prominent French commander during the Hundred Years’ War between England and France. He first distinguished himself by skilfully applying guerrilla techniques and tactics and breaking through the English encirclement during the conflict in Brittany 1341-1364.This success lifted French morale and elevated du Guesclin in the eyes of King Charles V. At the conclusion of this phase of the war, Bertrand was sent to the north of France to deal with the problem of mercenaries, and then to Castile, where he helped to ascend the throne to Enrique of Trastamar. War between the French and the English broke out again in 1369. Shortly thereafter, Charles V appointed du Guesclin constable of France. Bertrand defeated the enemies at the battle of Ponvallin, and soon recaptured the regions of Poitou and Saintonge, driving Edward Woodstock from French lands.
His death was a heavy blow to the French, and especially to Charles V, who honored Bertrand by burying him in the royal tomb in the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
